Doctors Say: Allow vaccination of migrants in detention. Sign the Petition!

Dear fellow doctors, health care professionals, and health professions students:

It’s flu season, and the federal government is refusing to vaccinate people in their detention centers. On November 5th, we wrote a letter requesting access to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) camp to provide free influenza vaccination. The letter was addressed to the secretaries of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services.

They have so far ignored the letter.

We would bring the qualified, licensed physicians. We would bring the doses of flu vaccine, at no cost to the government. All they need to do is allow us entry.

Join us in calling on the federal government to allow us to bring flu vaccines to the people held in a migrant detention camp.

Three children in CBP custody died from influenza last season. This is 9 times higher than the expected death rate for this disease. Despite this, CBP has repeatedly stated they will not provide vaccinations. This is just one, small example of the well-documented medical neglect in these camps.

These detention camps should not exist in the first place. While they remain, let’s hold our government accountable for their medical neglect. Join us as we stand for the basic dignity and safety of the vulnerable people in these camps.

PETITION STATEMENT:

We, the undersigned medical doctors, health professionals, and health professions students, call on Chad Wolf, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and Alex Azar, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, to allow Doctors for Camp Closure to offer influenza vaccine at a migrant detention center, in accordance with current, evidence-based standards of preventive health care.

Life-saving flu vaccines are needed immediately. This year the risk of catastrophic outcomes will be even higher due to COVID19. The inhumane detention centers should be closed immediately. While they still exist life-saving public health measures should be enacted now.

As a health professional working in Texas, it is unacceptable that we are denying these people basic necessities and allowing them to pass away from a preventable disease like influenza.

Detention centers should not exist, but so long as they do CBP & ICE need to implement effective public health measures. There is absolutely no reason why flu vaccines cannot be administered to migrants in CBP custody — we are not experiencing a shortage this year and the vaccine is relatively inexpensive.

Let us not forget that this is not the first time the U.S. government has failed to safeguard the health of incarcerated populations. During WWII, Japanese Americans were also detained on the premises of racism, xenophobia, and war hysteria. The U.S. government provided so few health services that physicians and students of health professions had to take it upon themselves to inoculate their communities against typhoid fever, pertussis, and smallpox. Have we not learned our lesson? This is NOT ok.

Disease eradication is a global issue and access to vaccines should be a human right. No child should die from a horrendous and TOTALLY preventable disease, no matter who their parents are or where they come. Children are not our enemies and they should not be pawns in the power struggles of ignorant hateful power mongers.

    James Woods,

I fully support the closing of “detention” camps. I am reminded about the internment camps for the Japanese and how fragile our freedoms are.

Althhough I am a retired FNP I am fully backing this petition. The lack of flu shots to this marginalized population is tantamount to allowing these migrants to become ill and possibly die. This is a stain on the USA and one more step by this anti-immigration President to inflict pain and suffering on an innocent population.
